Most Common Treatments for Eczema and Psoriasis

Eczema and Psoriasis are two common skin conditions which are very frequently mistaken for one another because they present with similar symptoms. There are however characteristics which set them apart, as outlined here. In each case obtaining a proper diagnosis is important, as treatment for the two conditions can be in some ways similar and some ways different, as explained below.

Here are some examples of treatments that have proved beneficial:

Eczema

  • Using an emollient (moisturiser) improves the condition of dry skin.
  • Topical steroids can be used (under supervision from a healthcare professional) to reduce swelling and redness during flare-ups.
  • Antibiotics are used in the case of infected eczema.
  • Swelling and redness of eczema can be reduced with antihistamines. Phototherapy has been shown to benefit some forms of eczema, although it is not recommended for sufferers whose condition worsens with exposure to sunlight.

Psoriasis

  • Using an emollient (moisturiser) improves the condition of dry skin.
  • Topical steroids can be used (under supervision from a healthcare professional) to manage the condition by reducing inflammation.
  • If topical treatments do not work to control symptoms you may be prescribed tablets which suppress the immune system, such as, methotrexate, acitretin, ciclosporin or hydroxycarbamide.
  • Phototherapy treatment is very effective in treating psoriasis. The skin is exposed to certain types of ultraviolet light which can slow the growth of affected skin cells.
  • Antihistamines will have little effect on Psoriasis and are not considered an appropriate course of treatment.

Remember…

In all cases it is important to consult your GP or a dermatologist, who will decide upon the appropriate course of treatment for you. Do not expect immediate results, in many cases treatment must be used consistently for some time before seeing improvement.

If you are diagnosed with Eczema or Psoriasis you may benefit from TalarMade’s range of Dermacura products, which provide rapid itch relief and promote skin repair.
