Plantar Fasciitis

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar Fasciitis is the inflammation and swelling of the Plantar Fascia ligament, the thick tissue that runs from your heel to the front of your foot. This is caused by tears along the bottom of your foot. This unfortunately results in burning, stabbing or aching pains under the swollen heel, but luckily it is a very common condition that can be treated.

It has been documented that pain from Plantar Fasciitis is at its worse in the morning when you get up for the day. This is because after sleep the ligament is tight and even the slightest movements will contract the tissue.

Sometimes Plantar Fasciitis is confused with a Heel Spur, which is a bony growth were the Plantar Fascia and Heel Bone join together. However, the two are actually different medical conditions.

Why might you have Plantar Fasciitis?

To understand why you may have Plantar Fasciitis it is important to first understand the Plantar Fascia ligament. As the Plantar Fascia is similar to a rubber band which loosens and contracts, in the process it will absorb a significant amount of pressure.

For this reason, sports and exercise are the most common cause of Plantar Fasciitis. It is often seen as a runners injury due to the repetetive nature and constant heel pressure from the recreational activity. It is also most common for middle-aged men and women.

What are the treatments for Plantar Fasciitis?

As the primary cause of Plantar Fasciitis is sport, the worst thing you can do is keep aggravating the injury. That's why the instant you suspect you have Plantar Fasciitis you should rest from whatever regular activity you do.

Also, it is important to perform Plantar Fascia exercises such as stretching. This is because alleviating the pain in the short term is unlikely to result in long term recovery.

In addition to this TalarMade has a selection of products that can help with the treatment. The Deluxe Plantar Fasciitis Night Splint is specially designed to provide controlled passive dorsi flexion and night immobilisation to provide pain relief from Plantar Fasciitis.
